| XVI Australian Deaf Games is Open! |
| Well! If you didn’t see the Opening Ceremony last night, you missed a spectacular show! We can’t imagine many of you missed it because it was a full house at Geelong Arena to welcome our 800 athletes as they paraded. Among those athletes for the first time at ADG were representatives from Fiji Samoa who entertained us with their own cultural performances from their homeland. David Peters, Vice President of Deaf Sports Australia welcomed everyone on behalf of Brent Phillips and made a special announcement that the ADSF Cup will now be renamed the John M Lovett Cup – a fitting way to acknowledge John’s significant contribution to deaf sports. The Australian National Anthem was sung in Auslan before the Games were officially opened by South Barwon MP Andrew Katos. In an amazing finale, we were entertained by 40 deaf students from all across the state who impressed crowds with a hip-hop routine to the beat of reverberating African drums and bongos and then hypnotised by Strange Fruit, swaying at impossible angles, perched at the top of 5-metre flexible poles. Now – let the Games begin! |
