Welcome Message from the President of Deaf Sports Australia
On behalf of Deaf Sport Australia (DSA), I would like to welcome you to the official website of the 2008 Australian Deaf Games!
The 2008 ADG will be the first time the Games have been held in a regional city and where better than the Gold Coast? The sun, the beaches and the theme parks! Bring your family, bring your children. Fun is guaranteed!
We have secured the Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre as the hub of the Games. Seven of the 14 sports offered are within 5 minutes walk of the Centre, another first. The remaining 7 sports are all held in the Southport precinct with Golf being held in Palm Meadows, Squash at Labrador and Tenpin Bowling at Ashmore.
For the first time ever, we are delighted to welcome our Trans-Tasman cousins, the Deaf Sports Federation of New Zealand. They have accepted our invitation to participate in the 2008 ADG. Hopefully this will be the beginning of a sustained close relationship between Australia and New Zealand in deaf sports.
Every effort has been made to ensure the 2008 ADG is affordable, taking into consideration the peak holiday season and staging the Games in a popular tourist city. For the first time, we have implemented the ‘User Pays’ fee structure, where you pay for the sport(s) you wish to participate in. There will be a standard Games Fee for everyone (athlete/official/visitor) and a Sports Fee on top of that. This reduces the financial risk the Games poses for DSA considerably and ensures you pay for what you want.
The 2008 ADG will be the 15th edition of the Game, continuing a long rich tradition dating back to 1964, and as far back as 1911 for the first Deaf Sports Carnival. The Games slogan – The Games We Love – reflects the unique passion members of the Australian deaf and hard of hearing community has for the Games. The 2008 Games on the Gold Coast promises to continue the tradition of the ADG – bringing 1,000 people together for 8 days celebrating sport, deaf culture and tradition. The ADG is the premier event in the Australian deaf and hard of hearing community – do not miss out!
See you on the Gold Coast on 3 January 2008!
Yours in deaf sports,
Brent Phillips
